10 Strategies to Get More Viewers on YouTube

Nov 11/2010

Today alone, 2 billion videos will be viewed on YouTube. Every minute, people upload over 24 hours of new video to the website. The term YouTube has become synonymous with the term “Viral Marketing” because it has more viral potential than anything other viral marketing method available.

Here are 10 simple strategies to get more viewers on YouTube.

1. Research Your Keywords

It is important to carefully research the keywords in your video's title to make sure people are actually searching for those keywords.

Use the following tool to identify terms people search for on YouTube:

You aren't neccessarily looking for the keyword with the most searches. You want a keyword with a significant number of searches that also has a manageable amount of competition.

2. Piggyback on Trending Topics

Trending means that a term is currently receiving an unusually high volume of searches. This is often because it is being featured on television, movies, or in the news. Because the term hasn't historically received a significant number of searches, the competition will often be very low.

Some ways to identify trending topics include:

• Google Trends (http://www.google.com/trends)

• YouTube’s Most Viewed Videos

• Amazon’s Movers and Shakers (http://www.amazon.com/gp/movers-and-shakers/)

• Browse the Latest News Stories on CNN, MSNBC, and FOX News

3. Video Quality

YouTube has a number of methods of measuring the quality of your videos.

YouTube uses the ratio of likes to dislikes your video receives, your total views, the number of comments left on your video, the number of people who embed the video in their website (or link to it), and the number of people who favorite your video.

Producing videos people will find useful, funny, or entertaining is one of the best ways to get more viewers on YouTube

Some people use the description field to ask people to hit the like button if they agree with them. Others ask thought provoking questions within their video, and ask people to answer in the comments.

4. Write Detailed Descriptions

When people search YouTube for a keyword, videos that contain the keyword in their descriptions come up in the results even if that keyword isn’t in the title, filename, or keywords for the video.

A longer description will naturally contain more potential keywords, and will get more views. Be careful though, because stuffing unrelated keywords into the description will cause your video to get dislikes if people feel they were tricked into watching it.

5. Create Responses to Already Popular YouTube Videos

Creating responses to popular videos is an easy way to get more viewers on YouTube. Video responses often show up in the recommendation section for the original video.

Use the “Most Viewed” section of YouTube to find videos that are currently trending, or search YouTube for a keyword and sort the results by “View Count” to find videos that are already popular.

6. Make a Series

The best way to establish authority on YouTube is to make sure people want to be notified when your next video comes out. Creating an ongoing series is one of the best ways to do this. Incorporate elements of consistency throughout your videos.

When you make a series, traffic to video #2 increases viewership of videos #1, #3, #4, and so on. As the series expands, the viewership for all videos increases exponentially. It is also very common for a good series to go viral.

7. Branding

Effective branding increases the odds that a person will subscribe to your channel by setting you apart from the millions of other videos online.

Develop a logo, make a professional intro/outro scene, and create some key elements that will be common to all of your videos. This could include developing a professional looking set, wearing branded clothing, or using a certain camera angle, background, or special effect.

8. Never Trick People Into Viewing Your YouTube Videos

Tricking people into watching your videos using misleading titles, thumbnails, and descriptions is by far the worst YouTube strategy available.

These tactics results in dislikes for your video. YouTube will not suggest videos that have a large number of dislikes.

9. Listen to Comment Feedback

As negative as YouTube comments can be, it's important to listen to feedback from your viewers. It’s also important to ask for feedback.

Feedback allows you to get in touch with what your viewers really want to see, and that is the best strategy to get more subscribers and viewers on YouTube.

10. Promote Your Video Outside of YouTube

New videos have the best chance of making it to the front page of YouTube in the “Most Viewed” sections. From the minute you upload your video the clock starts ticking. As time goes by it becomes less likely that your video will make the front page.

Self-promoting your videos outside of YouTube is by far the most powerful strategy for increasing your views on YouTube.

A) Start building up followers on Facebook and Twitter. Build an e-mail subscriber list. This way, you will have a large base of followers to promote your videos to when you release them.

B) Contact everyone you know, and ask them to post your video on their Facebook wall, Twitter account, website, and to e-mail your video to their friends.

C) Promote your video on Digg, Delicious, Reddit, and other popular social bookmarking and web 2.0 websites. Start some discussion threads about your video on forums related to your video.

D) Write a press release about your video and submit it to PRlog (free) or PRWeb (paid). Write a few articles related to the content of your video and post them on Ezine Articles with a link to your video in the resource box.

E) Lastly, e-mail a few website owners in your industry who talk about topics similar to your video. Send them a link to your video, and ask if they could link to it on their website or blog.
